Roadrunner
Will we have someday the complete map of the Earth life million of years ago?
110 million years ago, the Chinese ground was walked by… a roadrunner. As you read it: roadrunners like birds, in agreement with the investigators who analyzed the tracks, 50 million years older than any other report of similar birds.
With a weight of just half kilogram and almost half meter of beak to tail, had an unusual structure in its legs.
The majority of the birds have three toes facing forwards and one, the equivalent to the big toe in humans, backwards. The roadrunners have two forwards and two backwards. The feet with this form are called zygodactyls. No bird of these characteristics and that time has been found, according to Jeradl Harris, a paleontologist of Dixie State College in Utah, that spoke to news@nature.com.
In agreement with the tracks and the considered size, it is thought that it could run up to 8 kilometers per hour, according to the report in Natur wissenschaffen.
The fossils of birds of early Cretaceous include small birds, three-perching birds and possibly one or two hawks-like raptors.
The tracks were found in the province of Shandong, reason why this fossil was called Shandongornipes muxiai.

El lado feo del pez-The ugly side of the guppy

Displaying the best side
Watch until where animals come, beings considered inferiors in all senses. Are they in fact?

The symmetry is the morphologic perfection. It is the base that different species, generally, choose to mate, because it reveals good genes and a good health. What happens to those who are not symmetrical? They are also generally disadvantaged, but the interesting thing comes here from this note of science: they are conscious of it? Maybe.

In a work published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Mart R. Gross and colleagues found interesting things with guppyes.

But, let us consider other aspects before. The fluctuating asymmetry is the small deviation at random of the perfect symmetry and is present everywhere in the animal kingdom. In not few species play an important role in the election of mate due to the mentioned reasons.

In this study, the scientists show for the first time that individuals respond beaviorally to their own asymmetry, in what seems to be an adaptative manner.

During the courtship, guppy males with a high asymmetry in their color, tends to exhibit more their more colorful side, increasing their attractive exaggerating the quantity of their orange signals. It seems to be a strictly behavioral male response to the signals of females, as it occurs when the males court a non-reactive model female.

If the inferior males realize any mating advantage, is still unknown, but the study demonstrates with clarity a behavioral responde to random asymmetries, a situation that could be common in nature.

Para pensar un poco-A topic to think of

Matar sólo unos pocos animales no causa ningún daño.

Killing few
Killing only a few animal won’t do any damage. Or...? By means of an advanced mathematical model investigators of Sweden and The Netherlands showed that affirmation is true sometimes. Some times, however, to kill still a few individuals can have dramatic consequences, causing the populations to fluctuate wildly.
The important question, according to Tobias van Kooten, professor of Umea University in Sweden, is: who gets killed? The effects of killing individuals crucially depend on the size of the victims.
The regulation of populations is usually determined by the properties of one specific size class of individuals. In some species, that crucial stage consists of small individuals that can monopolize the available food, denying it to all the others. Alternatively, especially in populations of fishes, large individuals can limit the abundance of smaller individuals through cannibalism. It is then when such crucial size class is the target of mortality, that can happen unexpected things, according to what was published in The American Naturalist.

Miau: el origen del gato-Meow: I know where I come from

Wild and domestic

The domestic cat, perhaps the most numerous mascot of the planet, know now from where he comes.A group of scientists tracked his ancestry until the wild cat of the Near East, F.s lybica, which was domesticated from at least five maternal lineages in the region of the Fertile Crescente, according to an article published in Science.A team of investigators studied the evolutionary relations between domestic cats and the subspecies of wild cats: the European wild cat, the wild cat of the Near East, the wild cat of Central Asia, the South African wild cat and the cat of the Chinese desert. In several cases, wild and domestic cats have crossed to such degree that has been almost impossible to distinguish them. With the genetic material of 979 cats, Carlos Driscoll and colleagues analyzed the variation between ADN sequences in a variety of “marking” points within the genomes, to determine that lineages were more nearly related. It was as they discovered that each of the subspecies as well as the domestic cats fitted in a group, or “clado”, that was genetically differentiated. The lineage that includes to the domestic cat and several wild relatives originated before it was thought, more than 100,000 years ago. One of the clados included domestic cats and some wild cats of the Middle East, suggesting of this group come from the ancestral founding population of all the domestic cats.

Una manera de secuestrar CO2-A new way to sequester CO2

Sequestered
The scientists look in all sides for technologies that help the planet to be sustainable. An example in the following note of science, that exceeds the imagination.
The deep coal seams that are not viable commercially could be used for storage underground permanently carbon dioxide generated by human activities, avoiding their liberation to the atmosphere, according to two studies published in the International Journal of Environment and Pollution.
An additional benefit to store CO2 of this form is that methane of those coal mantles could be obtained. The preliminary studies were made by investigators of the U.S. Department of Energy' s National Energy Technology Laboratory, who analyzed the potential environmental impacts of sequestering CO2 in those noncommercial coal layers.
The key question is if the methane can be extracted of those layers and be replaced permanently with great amounts of carbon dioxide; if it were obtained, such layers would represent a great sink of CO2 produced by the industry. Scientist calculate that in the whole world exists a capacity of 3 trillions of tons of CO2 that could be stored in such layers.

Hiparión trae sorpresas-Hyperion brings a big surprise

Spongy
Is it life that we know very extended in the entire Universe?

Let us watch this note of science that takes to think more to us about how alive matter evolved.

Hyperion is a Saturn moon that did not escape to the sight of the spacecraft Cassini. And after two years of analysis the scientists just revealed important data. For example: there are hydrocarbons, the basic pillars of the life, which reinforces the idea that it is very extended in the known Universe.

This moon, the third most distant of Saturn, has a chaotic spin and orbit to the planet every 21 days.

The hydrocarbons are a combination of carbon and hydrogen atoms that there are in comets, meteorites and in the dust of our galaxy, in agreement with Dale Cruikshank, a planetary scientist at Nasa in the Ames Research Center.

When these molecules are embedded in ice and they are exposed to the ultraviolet light form new molecules of biological interest. “This does not mean that we have found life, but is an indication that the basic chemistry needed for the life is widespread in the Universe”.

Previous data of other Saturn moons, and moons Ganymede and Callisto in Jupiter, suggest the dioxide of carbon molecule are complex or attached with other superficial materials in multiple ways.

Hyperion is a spongy, full crater moon. Its density is almost half that of water.
