Abandono de nido-Birds in search of new adventures

Bird strategy
Many peculiar situations exist in the nature. Remiz pendulinus birds frequently leave eggs in search of more sexual adventures, in agreement with a study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Bilogy.

Around one of each three clutches of eggs are abandoned, a example of childrearing where both parents improve their reproductive success leaving the nest. How is this possible? Males and females can mate with more than seven diggerent mates in one breeding season and the frequently change its attitude to childcare between the different clutches.

Over the course of the season, more than half of all clutches are cared by the female, fifth by the males and the rest is left.

In an intensive battle of sexes, the males often leave the nest before egg-laying is complete, while the females sometimes hide eggs of the males, so that they can leave before he notices how many eggs have been laid.

When this happens, males left caring the eggs leave them frequently.

The peculiar thing with these birds is that in one of three cases both leave the nest, therefore the eggs are not successful.

During the course of the season, the desertion enable the parents to produce a greater number of offspring, improving its reproductive success over those more willing to stay home. Most peculiar it is that both sexes play the same strategy: what is good for the female is not for the male and vice versa, said Tamas Székely, of the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, investigator.

¿Por qué vemos películas de terror?-Why do we enjoy horror movies?

Horror movies
If the human beings look for the well-being and the pleasure, why do they sometimes act of another way? Let us watch this case: horror movies.
For the scientists it has not been easy to respond how that vision of pleasant life becomes jumbled in experiences that evoke negative feelings. Why do people pay to submerge in two hours of fear, disgust and terror?
The investigators have thought that they do not feel afraid in front of the film or that they enjoy an euphoric sense of relief at the end.
A new study of Eduardo Andrade, of the University of California and Joel Cohen of the University of Florida, in the Journal of Consumer Research, suggests neither of those theories is correct. The investigators argue that the assistants to the horror films are happy for being unfortunate, an approach that indicates that people simultaneously experience positive and negative emotions, not just relief when the threat is removed.

Los álamos agradecen a los lobos-Aspen trees say thank you to aspen tress

Three in one

The relationship between the environment and one of its constituent elements is essential to maintain the balance. One of the components that undergoes and evereything will suffer.

The wolves have returned to the Yellowstone park in the United States and for the first time in 50 years young aspen trees in the North sector grow.

What happened? A study published in Biological Conservation demonstrates that the called ecology of the fear works when recovering the balance in that ecosystem: aspen survive the american elk.

The wolves had been removed of the park. Aspen did not grow anymore by the damage caused by elks. The wolves were reintroduced in 1995 after 70 years of absence and the populations of elk began to back down, allowing that appeared again aspen trees. The elk have moved away of some areas by the fear to the wolves.

Su cerebro no lo deja aprender-Your brain is the problem

A big detail
Why is it more difficult to an adult to learn a second language? Although you do not believe, the answer could be in the brain.
The size of a small cerebral region, that only accounts for the 0.2 percent of whole the cerebral volume, the called region Heschl’s Gyrus would have the answer.A study of Patrick Wong and colleagues of Northwestern University published in Cerebral Cortex shows the evidences.
Based on the size of that region, the scientists could even predict if a person would be successful in learning 18 words of a pseudo language invented by them, before being put under the test.
Wong and his colleagues measured the size of the Gyrus, a finger-shaped structure in both sides of the brain. The difference is in the left side, reported.

About droplets
Get up Levántate and walk, could be the order. Chemists in Japan and Italy reported the development of droplets of oil that move by themselves, an advance that could take step to the movement of the artificial cells.

The study was published in the Journal of The American Chemical Society. Tadashi Sugawara, one of the authors, noticed that the efforts to make artificial cells have focused partially in the genetics and enabling them – which could become biofuel factories and other technological advances- to reproduce. The group had reported previously a self reproducing lipid capsule.

Scientists of the United States reported few weeks ago the successful transplantation of a bacterial genome, a great step towards the creation of artificial forms of life.

In this study, the investigators showed that a drop of oil, used to represent an artificial cell, had movement maintained through a chemical solution by several minutes until it stops. In doing it, the scientists saidthe droplet demonstrated a primitive form of chemotaxis (displacement of the cells in liquid means), one of basic cellular responses in which the cell directs its movement towards the presence of certain chemicals in its environment.

A new condition?
Did you know it? Science every day arrives with news that surprise. And they worry. If no, think if sometimes you listened to speak of the metabolic syndrome. The middle-age adults who drink more than one soft drink daily, either diet or regularno, have more of a 40 percent of more probabilities of having or of developing the metabolic syndrome, a set of conditions that increase the risk of heartd disease, according to data of the National Institute of Health of the Heart, the Lung and the Blood of the United States. It is considered that somebody has that syndrome if owns three of the following five factors:Waist circumference greater than or equal to 35 inches the women or 40 the men; fasting blood glucose of greater than or equal to 100 mg/dL, blood pressure greater than or equal to 135/85 mmHg, triglycerids greater than or equal to 150 mg/dL and good cholesterol or HDL below 40 mg/dL for men or below 50 mg/dL for women.Do you feel sick?

Really different
Although you can see that two plants are of the same species, are not equal. Surprising? That was just verifyed by a group of scientists.
In order to track the variation of the genome in different strains of Arabidopsis, the genetic matter of 19 wild plants was comapred with the sequenced one in the year 2000. Each one of the 120 million constituent blocks of the genome was examined.
In average, one of each 180 blocks is variable. And near the four percent of the reference genome also looks very different in the wild varieties or cannot be found at all. Each tenth gene was almost so defective that it could not fulfill plus its functions. It surprises that Arabidopsis has such plasticity. In contrast to the genome of humans or crop plants like corn, the one of Arabidopsis is less than one twentieth although it has almost the same number of genes.
The study was presented in Science and made by investigators of Germany and California.
The detailed analyzes showed that the genes for the basic cellular functions as the protein production or the regulation of genes rarely suffer knockout hits, but those important for the relation with other organisms, as those in charge of the defense against pathogens and infections were more variable. That variability seems to reflect the adaptation to local circumstances, like humidity or dryness.
How interact the genome and the environment? A question that will have to be responded in next occasion.
