En busca de gigantes jupiterianos-In search of big extrasolar planets

Bigger than Jupiter
This news arrives from the deep space: a group of astronomers who used powerful telescopes in Arizona and Chile in a planet survey around 54 near stars, discovered that extrasolar planets most massive than Jupiter are rare in other outer solar systems.Since 1995, astronomers have found more than 230 super Jupiters orbiting closely together to their parent stars, nearly to few Astronomical Units, the distance Earth-Sun distance. They have used the method of radial velocity. This technique of indirect planet detection measures the small movement ahead and back of stars while they are pulled ahead by the gravity of planets. But that technique is more sensitive for planets very near its stars. Reason why astronomers Laird Close, of the University of Arizona, and Rainer Lenzen, of the Max Plack Institute for Astronomy in Germany with Don McCarthy, designed a technique for sensitive images to methane planets. The results: they could detect planets far beyond 10 UA and around young stars like the Sun, and they did not find planets with five or six masses that of Jupiter to distances greater than 20 UA (the Sun-Uranus distance)-to 100 AU.Conclusion: a new track to understand how the planets form.Photo courtesy: Sample of the images taken with the new technique.

¿Cuántos objetos puede recordar a la vez?-How many objects can you remember at once?

Remembering things

We continue today our trip for the world of the science. And look how interesting is this note:
Of how many simple objects can you think at the same time?
Although people think that they have rich visual experiences, the investigators have found that a person average can think in near four at the time.
This ability, according to investigators of the University of Oregon varies from person to person, and they found that an individual’s capacity of short term memory is a strong predictor of IQ and the scholastic achievement. People with high IQ can think at the same time of more things.
Because the capacity of the sort-term memory system seems to underlie a core aspect of intelligence, the cognitive psychologists have been interested in determining what causes a four items limit for most people. A reasonable idea that the investigators have been examining, is that memory capacity might be influenced by the complexity of items being stored.
For example, an 4 megabytes iPhone, the popular new Apple cell phone, might be able to hold about 1.000 four-minutes songs, but, of course, many less songs would be stored if they were all 20 minutes in length, explained UO psychology professors, Edward Awh and Eduard Vogel, co-authors of a study published this month in Psychological Science.
Does human memory work that form? Their study brought new surprising conclusions on that topic. Even when very complex objects had to be remembered by subjects participating in lab experiments, the participants, 18 to 30, still were capable to hold 4 objects in the active memory. However, Awh said, the clarity of those objects was not perfect and some had clearer memoirs than others.
There was a second discovery that surprised the group. Although it seems reasonable that people that think at the same time about more things can also have clearer memoirs that the average, that was not the case, Vogel said.
According to Awh, same people that can remember many objects in a time, no necessarily have clearer memories of them. That is to say that to know the number of things that a person can remember doesn't say anything on what clarity he has those memories. "So even though people with a high IQ can think at the same time of more things, there is not a guarantee on how good those memories might be", Awh said.

Unos días de descanso-Some days off

Estaré ausente por unos días. Nos vemos el próximo lunes.

I will take some days off. See you next monday.

Star nursery
As it happens frequently in our life: someday the abundance finishes and everything gets quiet. That is what we see in the following note of science on a neighbor who is giving birth to thousands and thousands children.
Hundreds of thousands of blue and red stars are visible in a new image of galaxy NGC 4449 taken by the the Hubble Space Telescope. Hot bluish clusters of massive stars are scattered throughout the galaxy, interspersed with numerous dustier reddish regions of current star formation. Massive dark clouds of gas and dust are silhouetted against the flaming starlight.
NGC 4449 has been forming stars since several billion years ago, but it is experiencing a star formation event at a much higher rate than in the past. This unusual explosive and intense star formation activity qualifies as a starburst. At the current rate, the gas supply that feeds the stellar production would only last for another billion years or so.
Starbursts usually occur in the central regions of galaxies, but NGC 4449 has a more widespread star formation activity, since the very youngest stars are observed both in the nucleus and in streams surrounding the galaxy.

Con un cigarrillo comienza la adicciónJust a cigarette is the way addiction begins

A cigarette per day
Do not believe that smoking a cigarrette a day is not bad. Addiction comes behind. Let us see.
A study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine shows that 10 percent of the young people who begin to smoke is addicted within two days of first inhaling from a cigarette, and 25 percent are addicted within a month. The study found that adolescents who only smoke a few cigarettes a month suffer withdrawal symptoms when deprived of nicotine, a surprising finding in opposition to the belief long maintained that people with sestablished smoking habits of at least five cigarettes per the day experiencied those symptoms. The study monitored 1,246 students of sixth degree in six communities of Massachussets during 4 years.
While smoking one cigarette will keep withdrawal symptoms away for less than an hour in long-time smokers, novice smokers find that one cigarette suppresses withdrawal for weeks at a time. One dose of nicotine affects brain function long after the nicotine is gone from the body researchers said. Symptoms of nicotine addiction can appear when youth are smoking as little as one cigarette per month. One cigarette will relieve the craving produced by nicotine withdrawal for weeks, but as tolerance to nicotine builds, the smoker finds that must smoke ever more frequently to cope with withdrawa

The gen
A gene that is strongly associated with a risk in children of developing asthma was identified by an international team of scientists, whose findings are published in Nature.
In a genetic study of more than 2,000 children, scientists from the University of Michigan and colleagues from London, France and Germany found genetic markers that increase a child's risk for asthma. These markers are located on chromosome 17, and children with this marker had higher levels of a new gene called ORMDL3 in their blood, which occurs in higher amounts in children with asthma. The presence of the disease-associated version of the gen increases the risk of asthma by 60-70 percent, according to the study.

Lo que no sirve para el insomnio-Some supplements are not useful to treat insmonio

Questioned
People’s beliefs against scientist words. A study published in the journal Sleep finds that large segments of the U.S. population use valerian or melatonin to treat their insomnia.
The study, authored by Donald L. Bliwise, of Emory University, focused on the data collected from 31,044 individuals from the 2002 Alternative Health/Complementary and Alternative Medicine Supplement to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).
Dr. Bliwise discovered that, of the survey sample, 5.9 percent used valerian and 5.2 percent used melatonin. Relatively greater use occurred in individuals under the age of 60. The decision to use such substances was made in consultation with a health care provider less than half of the time.
“Within the United States, usage of alternative and complementary medicine is rising dramatically,” said Bliwise.
However, an evaluation of common oral non-prescription treatments for insomnia conducted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s (AASM) clinical practice review committee did not find a beneficial effect for many of the herbal supplements, dietary changes and other nutritional supplements popularly used for treating insomnia symptoms, including valerian and melatonin. The AASM does not support the use of such products for treating symptoms of insomnia.
