Se pregona que el etanol es un combustible amigable con el ambiente y que su combustión es limpia. Jacobson, un científico atmosférico de Stanford University, publicado en la edición de hoy del jounrla Environmental Science & Technology.
El etanol, dijo Jacobson, se promueve como un combustible limpio y renovable que reducirá el calentamiento global y la polución del aire, “pero nuestros resultados muestran que una mezcla elevada supone un riesgo igual o mayor para la salud pública que la gasolina, que provoca un daño alto en la salud de las personas”.
El científico realizó simulaciones, con una mezcla de 85 por ciento etanol y 15 por ciento de gasolina y encontró serios problemas de salubridad.
Por ejemplo, se reduce la emisión de dos carcinógenos, benceno y butadieno, pero se incrementan otros, el formaldehído y el acetaldehído.
