Un hongo muy grande-A fungus 6 mt tall

Científicos de la Universidad de Chicago y e Museo Nacional de Historia natural en Washington encontraron evidencia que resuelve un gran misterio.
Sus análisis químicos revelaron que un extraño organismo, uno de los más extraños que pobló la Tierra, era un hongo, según su reporte en la edición de mayo de Geology.
Durante más de un siglo originó grandes discusiones y se llegó a clasificar como una conífera, o un liquen. Otros dijeron que era una especie de alga.
El hongo es denominado Prototaxites, un organismo que se extinguió hace unos 350 millones de años. Vivía adherido a los troncos de los árboles de más de seis metros de altura, haciéndolo el más grande organismo viviente en sus días.
“No importa lo que argumentaran otros, eso es una locura”, dijo Kevin Boyce, profesor de Ciencias Geofísicas en esa universidad.
La clasificación del hongo nació en 1919 con Francis Hueber. Los estudios actuales confirmaron su teoría, evidencias anatómicas de que Prototaxites no e suna planta sino un hongo.
