La longitud de los dedos de un niño puede predecir sus habilidades naturales en matemática y lengua. En un estudio con 75 niños de 6 y 7 años, investigadores hallaron que el largo de sus dedos estaba relacionado con el desempeño en exámenes estandarizados de matemática y habilidad verbal.
Los que poseían los dedos índices más cortos que los anulares tendían a sobresalir en los números y las niñas con índices y anulares de la misma longitud tendían a rendir mejor en la prueba verbal.
Los resultados fueron publicados en British Journal of Psychology.
Algunos científicos piensan que las hormonas explican estos resultados. La longitud de los dedos se determina en el útero materno, donde la exposición a la testosterona y al estrógeno es clave. A mayor exposición a la testosterona, menor longitud del dedo índice con respecto al anular, mientras que el estrógeno favorece una longitud similar entre ambos dedos. La exposición prenatal a las hormonas también influye en el desarrollo cerebral.
"Se considera que la testosterona promueve el desarrollo de las áreas del cerebro que suelen participar en las habilidades espaciales y matemáticas", explicó en un comunicado el autor del estudio, el doctor Mark Brosnan, director del Departamento de Psicología de la University of Bath, en el Reino Unido.
